National Poppy Day 2024

County Executive David Morgan, along with Nicki Hartsfield (left) and Dawn Garner (right) from the American Legion Auxiliary #146, signed a proclamation declaring Friday, May 24, 2024, as National Poppy Day in Lawrence County, Tennessee.

National Poppy Day is the Friday preceding Memorial Day. The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It is a symbol of remembrance of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion Family, led largely by the American Legion Auxiliary, to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. Subsequently, in 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national initiative of the American Legion.

Take a moment today and pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing a memorial poppy. Poppies will be sold, with proceeds benefiting local veterans.
